Chapter Ten

Heather stared at Reid in the faint morning light with something akin to wonder. His desire had been a palpable force, a living, breathing dragon that had burned through her psyche and into her most intimate feelings. It had been dark, moody, forceful, his aura battering at her own will until she could no longer separate her need from his. The night had swirled into one long scene of passion and desire. Even now, she could feel the stirring of lust, though she figured she could barely move to act on it.

She still loved him. Desperately, completely, foolishly loved him. She was wrong for him; she knew that, had always known, and had never believed that they would ever become a proper couple.

Their history together was strewn over years. Heather remembered them all as snapshots of memory. Her first time with a man, with Reid, slung over the buttery-soft leather seats of his luxury car. Her twenty-first birthday in college so many years ago that had faded into a mistake in the morning light. The night they spent wrapped in each other's arms in her shack, just talking… Those moments had been anathema's, unreal and unsustainable.

Two months together in South Carolina. Heaven, but it didn’t last; maybe it couldn’t last. Four years ago, Heather still bore the taint of the mountain shack. Now, Sweetwater was a bittersweet memory, often more bitter than sweet. She had spent four years disguised as someone else. It had changed her irrevocably but had not even made a dent in her love for Reid.

She was not that mountain girl anymore, and Reid... Reid had changed, too. Warily Heather looked him over, unable to deny the beautiful, healthy glow around him. It was soft, indistinct, but the pale blue of love, not dark blue, nothing conflicted. It had been there before, but she had been too young, too self-conscious, to see it for what it was.

He loved her. After all she had done to betray him, he loved her. He was a Congressman, successful, wealthy, handsome, and he loved her. His break-up to Lacey had barely registered with his constituents, but would a relationship with Heather ruin him?

Bad enough, she was the child of a dirt-poor small-town whore, she was also an accused kidnapper and a freak who saw auras, but Reid did not know that chestnut yet.

Heather sighed and peeled her eyes away from him before pushing herself up and hobbling into the bathroom. There were things to do today. The list was topped with Will, Will, Will.

Heather jumped into the shower, sighing in pleasure as the hot water soothed her sore muscles. She would like to stay with him, could barely stand the thought of leaving him now. She would come clean with all her secrets and let him decide if he wanted her to stay.

"Baby, I thought you ran away from me until I heard the shower," Reid said, voice husky from sleep, as he stepped into the shower with her.

"Mmm, I can barely move, no running anywhere for me," she murmured playfully, turning as he embraced her.
